An economical, easy-to-use glow discharge system that treats TEM support films (grids) and SEM substrates with low-pressure plasma to make their surfaces hydrophilic. On treated grids aqueous suspensions spread better, nanoparticle aggregation decreases and staining becomes more uniform; ultrathin sections adhere to grids more easily. In SEM preparation it improves the dispersion of powder suspensions and substrate wettability. Treatment is completed within minutes.
