The H-type replaceable-membrane cell is a two-compartment glass cell for electrocatalysis work where the cathode and anode reactions must be kept apart. The cathode and anode compartments are separated by an ion exchange membrane. This keeps products formed at one electrode from crossing to the other electrode and reacting again, and lets you control the electrolyte, pH and gas atmosphere of each compartment independently.
The flanges of the two compartments are joined with a chain clamp; opening the clamp lets you change the membrane in minutes. The reference electrode sits in the same compartment as the working electrode, which reduces the ohmic (iR) drop in solution. The PTFE inner core of the lid rotates 360° so the electrodes can be aligned with the channel (usually parallel to the membrane); tightening the outer POM cap then seals the cell.
In the standard-sealed cell, the lid and electrode feedthroughs are closed with O-rings and sealing screws. An oxygen-free atmosphere is maintained by purging with nitrogen or argon. It is not intended for vacuum or pressure.
The body is made of borosilicate glass 3.3, which has low thermal expansion (3.3 × 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹) and the highest resistance classes against water (HGB 1) and acids (S 1). Avoid sudden temperature differences above 120 °C to reduce the risk of breakage.
The single-layer body is a simple, economical choice for routine measurements at room temperature. If temperature control is needed, choose the jacketed version of the same cell.
