The classic five-neck cell is the traditional electrochemistry setup with ground-glass necks and an inverted-cone lid. The set consists of the cell body, an F-type gas inlet tube, a salt bridge, a liquid seal and PTFE stoppers (manufacturer data).
The salt bridge brings the reference electrode close to the working electrode and reduces resistance in the measurement. The F-type inlet can feed gas both below and above the liquid surface: gas is bubbled through the solution before the measurement to remove oxygen, and only fed over the surface during the measurement. The 5-20 mL option has a conical bottom, so the solution amount can be adjusted for small samples.
The cell has standard sealing. When used with a rotating disk electrode (RDE), the shaft passage cannot be closed completely; increase the gas flow over the surface in this case.
The body is made of borosilicate glass 3.3, which has low thermal expansion (3.3 × 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹) and the highest resistance classes against water (HGB 1) and acids (S 1). Avoid sudden temperature differences above 120 °C to reduce the risk of breakage.
In the jacketed (double-layer) version an outer water jacket surrounds the inner cell. Water from a circulating thermostatic bath flows through the jacket via hose connections and keeps the electrolyte at a constant temperature during the measurement.
