The all-PTFE H-type membrane photoelectrochemical cell (absolutely sealed) combines the two-compartment membrane setup with the chemical resistance of a PTFE body. The cathode and anode compartments are separated by an ion exchange membrane. This keeps products formed at one electrode from crossing to the other electrode and reacting again, and lets you control the electrolyte, pH and gas atmosphere of each compartment independently. The PTFE body offers almost universal chemical resistance and can be used up to 260 °C. It is a safe choice for electrolytes containing HF or strong alkali, which attack glass and quartz.
The two compartments are joined with through-bolts and the membrane is easy to change. The electrodes plug into socket connections inside the lid and must be made to fit the cell. The quartz window can be removed and refitted quickly. A sparger delivers gas below the liquid surface. Different shapes are available for different experiments: straight for CO₂ reduction and L-type for nitrogen reduction (manufacturer data). The minimum volume is 30 mL.
In the absolutely sealed cell the electrodes plug into socket (jack) connections inside the lid, isolating the system completely from the outside. With valves fitted, the cell can be evacuated (below −100 kPa) or operated under slight pressure (max. 0.5 MPa, manufacturer data). The electrodes are made to fit this cell and must be ordered together with it.
