The open cylindrical quartz cell is made by fusion welding of quartz, with no glue, and transmittance above 95% (manufacturer data). A PTFE base support stops the bottom quartz window from being scratched. The lid is PTFE; a gas inlet/outlet can be added on request for nitrogen deoxygenation.
It is usually used with a Ø3.8 mm Ag/AgCl reference, Ø0.5 mm platinum wire counter and 3 mm glassy carbon working electrode; the working electrode can be replaced by a 3 mm gold, platinum or other disk electrode. The cell can be used with electrochemiluminescence (ECL) instruments (manufacturer data). Electrodes are sold separately.
Quartz (fused silica) transmits light from about 190 nm up to the near infrared, while borosilicate glass largely blocks UV light below about 320 nm. Quartz is therefore used for UV-Vis spectroelectrochemistry and photoelectrochemical work with UV light. Quartz is not resistant to hydrofluoric acid (HF).
