The indispensable base solvent of lithium-ion electrolytes. Its high dielectric constant dissolves lithium salts strongly and enables ion dissociation. Its most critical function in the electrolyte is forming a stable SEI layer on the graphite anode surface, which is why it appears in almost every commercial formulation. Being solid at room temperature, it is used blended with other solvents.
