Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is light emission by species generated electrochemically at the electrode surface; its high sensitivity makes it common in bioanalysis and sensor studies.
The bottom of this PEEK cell is a light-detection channel: transparent ITO or FTO is used as working electrode and the emitted light reaches the detector from below. Working-electrode area is 1 cm² and the cell has gas inlet/outlet.
