A differential electrochemical mass spectrometer (DEMS) analyses gaseous products, volatile intermediates and final products of electrochemical reactions on-line, qualitatively and quantitatively. The interface between the cell and the mass spectrometer is a hydrophobic gas-permeable membrane, so products are detected as they form.
During a potential sweep the ion current for a selected mass is recorded in parallel with the faradaic current to give a mass voltammogram; when several products form together, the faradaic current of each can be followed against potential or time.
Gas and liquid inlets in one system allow electro-, photo- and thermocatalysis as well as battery gas-evolution studies with the same instrument.
