A titanium test cell for following the electrode/electrolyte interface of lithium batteries by infrared spectroscopy (ATR). Silicon is used as the infrared crystal.
Crystal choice matters: germanium is relatively active and can give high anodic current at positive potentials, while ZnSe is unstable in acidic and alkaline solutions; silicon is therefore preferred for electrochemical ATR measurements.
A spring presses the positive and negative electrode samples firmly against the separator; double O-rings keep the cell sealed after leaving the glovebox.
