A membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyser sandwiches a gas diffusion electrode, ion-exchange membrane and anode between cathode and anode flow plates; with no liquid electrolyte gap between the electrodes (zero gap), cell resistance is low and current densities close to industrial scale can be reached.
This cell has an optical window for in-situ Raman measurements of an MEA under real operating conditions; the window–sample distance is below 5 mm. The channel is 14 × 14 mm and can be customised.
The plates are high-purity titanium; nickel plates can be made for better corrosion resistance in alkaline solutions. Current tabs are gold-plated copper; PEEK quick connectors (1/8 inch) create shear inside the channel.
