The in-situ XRD battery test cell is designed to follow crystal-structure and phase changes of the electrode material by X-ray diffraction during charge/discharge. The electrode–window distance is below 2 mm.
A version of the two-electrode model with an added reference electrode; the working-electrode potential is monitored against the reference, so cathode and anode contributions can be separated.
The cell body is high-purity titanium; an internal spring adjusts the load on the electrode stack and keeps the electrodes in close contact with the separator.
The cell can be assembled and sealed in a glovebox and then measured outside; O-ring sealing keeps air and moisture out.
It is connected to a battery cycler or potentiostat for measurements during charge/discharge, and the sample can be removed undamaged after the test.
