The square quartz electrochemical cell is machined from a single piece of high-transmission quartz, with no glued joints. Light transmittance is not below 95% (manufacturer data). Quartz (fused silica) transmits light from about 190 nm up to the near infrared, while borosilicate glass largely blocks UV light below about 320 nm. Quartz is therefore used for UV-Vis spectroelectrochemistry and photoelectrochemical work with UV light. Quartz is not resistant to hydrofluoric acid (HF).
The quartz body withstands up to 900 °C; remove the PTFE lid before heat cleaning or sterilization. Round or square holes can be drilled in the lid on request, and a sintered salt bridge or Luggin capillary can be added. An optional PTFE stirring module is available. This cell is the open type.
