The sealed thin-layer spectroelectrochemical cell is designed for UV-Vis spectroelectrochemistry of oxygen-sensitive redox species. The platinum mesh working electrode sits in a thin gap in the light path, so the species in the thin solution layer is converted quickly and the spectral change is followed in real time.
The quartz body is machined in one piece, transparent on four sides, with transmittance above 95% (manufacturer data). The quartz neck is externally threaded; the inner PEEK core rotates 360° to align the electrodes exactly with the thin gap, and the PEEK outer cap is tightened to close the cell. The electrode feedthroughs are sealed on a PEEK stopper with O-ring screws. Compatible electrodes: Ø3.0 mm Ag/AgCl reference, Ø0.5 mm platinum wire counter and 6 × 7 mm platinum mesh working electrode (sold separately, must fit the cell).
Quartz (fused silica) transmits light from about 190 nm up to the near infrared, while borosilicate glass largely blocks UV light below about 320 nm. Quartz is therefore used for UV-Vis spectroelectrochemistry and photoelectrochemical work with UV light. Quartz is not resistant to hydrofluoric acid (HF).
