A classic three-chamber gas diffusion electrolyser cell.
In a flow cell the gas is fed from the gas chamber to the back of the gas diffusion electrode; catholyte and anolyte are pumped through separate compartments and the cathode and anode compartments are separated by an ion-exchange membrane.
In a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) the gaseous reactant (e.g. CO₂) reaches the catalyst layer directly; because the low solubility of the gas in water is bypassed, much higher current densities can be reached than in conventional cells.
The body is chemically resistant PEEK; reaction area is 1 cm² and the cathode–anode gap 7 mm. This model has no observation window.
