A test cell for all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) research. It consists of end plates, current collectors, bipolar plates and electrode frames; the bipolar plates are high-purity graphite for conductivity, with PEEK fixing rods.
In flow batteries the electrolyte is stored in external tanks and pumped through the cell, so power and energy capacity scale independently; reusable electrolyte, safety and long life make them a long-duration storage option for wind and solar, grid balancing and backup power.
The cell is designed for stable operation over thousands of cycles (manufacturer data).
