A membrane electrode assembly (MEA) electrolyser sandwiches a gas diffusion electrode, ion-exchange membrane and anode between cathode and anode flow plates; with no liquid electrolyte gap between the electrodes (zero gap), cell resistance is low and current densities close to industrial scale can be reached.
With optical windows on both cathode and anode sides, this cell lets gas bubbles, flooding and salt deposition in the channels be observed and recorded with a high-speed camera during operation.
The cathode side has an open serpentine channel and the anode side open multiple parallel channels. Round-window (A) and square-window (B) types are offered.
| Window | Quartz, round (A) or square (B) |
| Cathode channel | Open serpentine |
| Anode channel | Open multiple parallel |
