The active tip of the electrode is a flat disk made of 99.99% pure platinum. Showing a clear hydrogen adsorption wave in cyclic voltammetry, platinum is a convenient reference surface for checking surface cleanliness and active area. It is preferred for studying hydrogen evolution and oxygen reduction, and for detecting hydrogen peroxide. Its negative range is narrower than carbon's because hydrogen evolution starts early.
In this L-shaped model the platinum disk sits on the end face of the PTFE body's perpendicular head, so it faces sideways. This suits in-situ Raman cells, where the disk must be close to the window, and photoelectrochemistry, where it faces the light. Disk diameters: Ø0.5–6 mm. PTFE is inert to nearly all chemicals but soft; handle with care. Other shapes and bodies are on separate pages.
| Electrode type | Platinum disk working electrode |
| Electrode shape | L-shaped; disk on the end face of a short perpendicular head (faces sideways, 90° to the body) |
| Body material | PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) |
| Disk material | Platinum, 99.99% |
| Disk diameter | 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 mm |
| Body / total length | 60 mm / ≈75 mm (manufacturer data) |
| Connection | Gold-plated pin |
| Potential window (aqueous) | Negative limit set by hydrogen evolution (low overpotential), positive limit by oxygen evolution; values depend on electrolyte and pH |
| Polishing | 1 µm diamond slurry on a nylon pad, then alumina on microcloth (final step 0.05 µm); rinse with pure water |
| Electrochemical cleaning | As an alternative to polishing, by potential cycling in a suitable electrolyte |
| Body chemical resistance | Inert to nearly all chemicals and solvents; attacked only by very reactive substances such as elemental alkali metals, elemental fluorine and chlorine trifluoride |
| Operating temperature | Not specified for this product. One electrode maker recommends 10–25 °C for similar PTFE-body disk electrodes; a body expanding with heat can break the seal |
