The active tip of the electrode is a flat disk made of 99.99% pure platinum. Platinum is a well-defined electrocatalytic surface that shows a distinct hydrogen adsorption wave in cyclic voltammetry. It is used to study hydrogen and oxygen reactions and to detect hydrogen peroxide and oxidants. Because its overpotential for hydrogen evolution is low, its usable range in the negative direction in aqueous media is narrower than that of carbon electrodes.
This model has a standard straight PTFE body, with the platinum disk at the tip, in line with the rod. Disk diameters: Ø0.5–6 mm. PTFE is inert to nearly all acids, bases and solvents, so it also suits electrolytes that attack PEEK, like concentrated sulfuric acid. It is soft, so avoid scratching or denting it. PEEK, L- and T-type versions are on separate pages.
| Electrode type | Platinum disk working electrode |
| Electrode shape | Standard straight rod; disk on the end face, in line with the body axis |
| Body material | PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) |
| Disk material | Platinum, 99.99% |
| Disk diameter | 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 mm |
| Body / total length | 60 mm / ≈75 mm (manufacturer data) |
| Connection | Gold-plated pin |
| Potential window (aqueous) | Negative limit set by hydrogen evolution (low overpotential), positive limit by oxygen evolution; values depend on electrolyte and pH |
| Polishing | 1 µm diamond slurry on a nylon pad, then alumina on microcloth (final step 0.05 µm); rinse with pure water |
| Electrochemical cleaning | As an alternative to polishing, by potential cycling in a suitable electrolyte |
| Body chemical resistance | Inert to nearly all chemicals and solvents; attacked only by very reactive substances such as elemental alkali metals, elemental fluorine and chlorine trifluoride |
| Operating temperature | Not specified for this product. One electrode maker recommends 10–25 °C for similar PTFE-body disk electrodes; a body expanding with heat can break the seal |
