A version of the two-electrode titanium battery test cell developed for gas-pressure measurement. A valved gas line and a pressure gauge are added to the cell, so the internal gas pressure can be monitored and set during charge/discharge. Side reactions such as electrolyte decomposition and SEI/CEI formation generate gas; tracking cell pressure over cycling shows when, and at which voltage, gas formation starts. An internal spring sets the load on the electrode–separator stack and keeps the electrodes in firm contact with the separator; because the same load is reproduced at every assembly, results are comparable between runs.
The body is high-purity titanium; the inner insulator is PEEK and the terminals are gold-plated copper. Chemically resistant O-rings and a screw-down lid keep the cell gas-tight, so it can be assembled in a glovebox and then tested outside. After testing, the cell is easily disassembled and cleaned without damaging the sample, so electrodes can be recovered for post-mortem analysis. The separator is supplied by the user.
