The platinum sheet (foil) electrode is a flat platinum sheet mounted on an insulating electrode rod, used primarily as the counter (auxiliary) electrode of a three-electrode cell. Its geometric area is well defined and easy to calculate, and it is mechanically more stable than a mesh. Since platinum is inert in most media it is a dependable choice for routine work.
Choose the sheet when you need a larger, known area than a wire gives (from 5×2 mm up to 30×30 mm; thickness 0.1 – 0.5 mm). Aim for at least about three times the working electrode area. A sheet blocks light and flow and may hold bubbles on its surface during gas evolution; in those cases a mesh is the better fit.
| Electrode type | Platinum sheet (foil) electrode |
| Electrode material | Platinum |
| Sheet thickness | 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 or 0.5 mm (by model code) |
| Sheet sizes (width × length) | 5×2 (Pt 213, 0.2 mm), 5×5, 5×10, 10×10, 10×15, 10×20, 10×30, 15×15, 20×20 and 30×30 mm |
| Thickness – size availability | 0.5 mm: 10×10, 10×15, 10×20, 10×30, 15×15, 20×20 · 30×30 mm: up to 0.3 mm · 5×5 and 5×10 mm: up to 0.3 mm |
| Geometric area (one face) | 5×2 mm ≈ 0.1 cm² · 10×10 mm ≈ 1 cm² · 20×20 mm ≈ 4 cm² · 30×30 mm ≈ 9 cm² (how much of the faces is immersed depends on the mounting) |
| Standard electrode rod length | 60 mm, 80 mm or 100 mm |
| Compatible media | Widely used as a counter electrode in aqueous acid media (e.g. H₂SO₄). In organic solvents the solvent compatibility of the insulating body must be checked separately |
| Platinum dissolution / redeposition | At high anodic potentials and in long or many-cycle experiments platinum can dissolve and redeposit on the working electrode; in tests of Pt-free catalysts this can make the activity look higher than it is. For such work prefer a graphite/glassy-carbon counter electrode or a separate compartment |
| Cleaning | After use rinse with a suitable solvent, then with high-purity water; check the surface for deposits and run a blank scan if cross-contamination is possible. Do not flame-anneal electrodes with a polymer body |
| Connection | Connects to the counter electrode (CE/auxiliary) lead of the potentiostat. Contact pin type and cell/cable fit can be confirmed before ordering |
